Crew Team LettersLetter from Steve Gladstone, Cal Crew Director:Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends: A quick update on the fall training and the Head of the Charles. The training for the Varsity squad is going well. The quantifiable data that the erg scores give us would indicate that we’re on track for a successful spring. Of course, without effective translation of that to boat moving, it’s of little value. The most important predictor for success in the spring is the thoroughness with which our athletes approach their day by day training, with that, I could not be more pleased. We sent two boats back to the Head of the Charles. Please click here to see the results. Both crews performed well. Unlike most of our competitors, we don’t alter our training to prepare for that regatta. Simply stated, we work at lower cadences (18-24) so that we don’t sacrifice technical gains for the spring. That being said, rowing four and five beats lower than our competitors (in the Championship Eight Category), we moved faster down the course than all but one of collegiate competitors (Princeton). The Freshmen had an exceptional performance. Again, under stroking their competitors (in the Youth Eight), they beat all the collegiate entries and lost only to the German Under 23 National Squad. Those racing were as follows:
It continues to be a pleasure to work out of the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center. The space that we have here allows us to train with more efficiency. I can’t thank all of you enough for the gifts that you have made, both to annual giving and to the new boathouse. Your philanthropy is our life-blood. Those of you that live in the area, please give me a call; I would be delighted to have you come out and watch practice. You’d have a first hand experience of what your gifts are supporting. I look forward to hearing from you. All My Best, |
